You can tell a lot about people by asking that simple question. Your outlook on life touches every personal and professional relationship you have and it can determine whether or not you end up a lonely old hag or a hag surrounded by friends and loved ones.

I have always been an optimist. Some have called me a Pollyanna. (If you don't get that reference, Google it.) As bad as things have been (and some still are) in my life, it just isn't my nature to wallow in self-pity, to bitch for very long or to sink into one of those numbing depressions that I have read about. I'm not trying to get kudos here - it's just a simple fact of life. I think some people are born looking at the world in a positive way and others are born thinking that the world is a negative place. There are times when I have almost wished that I could get really depressed, huddle in bed and refuse to face the world. I have never been someone that was taken care of - I've always been the caretaker. That's part of my nature too, not that one necessarily goes with the other.

You can also divide people into 2 other groups - the responsible ones and the irresponsible ones. Guess which one I am? Go ahead, guess.

I have a brother. Yes, I know some of you may be surprised by this statement since I rarely talk about him. He's older than I am by 3 years, which will make him 50 this coming February. (Yeah, yeah, that means I'm 46 now. I can live with it.) In his almost 50 years of existence he has never taken responsibility for anything. He has always relied on his scheming talent to con someone into taking care of him, providing for him, feeding him. If only he would use his abilities for good instead of evil.

But I digress.

I have met people who know others like my brother. I guess there is one in every family, a rotten apple hiding somewhere in the family tree.

Perhaps this is part of the balance of life: the optimists and the pessimists. The responsible and the irresponsible. The givers and the takers. The Democrats and the Republicans. Oops.

Sometimes I do wish I could change sides for a little while. Get taken care of. Not have to solve all the problems.

Oh well. Can't go against my nature. It is what it is.

I will however give kudos, thanks and my gratitude to Ms. Linda the Amazing for my new page design. Way cool!! Thank you from the top of my heart, as the Japanese say.
