Where I'll be on Sunday
May. 1st, 2009 10:02 amPete Seeger's 90th Birthday Celebration
As some of you may know, when I was a child Pete Seeger was my Uncle Pete. My dad sang with Pete and
Woody Guthrie back in the 1950s in NYC and my mom used to hand out the leaflets as they drove around in the sound truck. She also told me she used to babysit for Arlo when the guys were rehearsing. She said that's how she got her practice changing diapers before my brother and I were born.
We used to meet up with Pete and sometimes Arlo at concerts around the tri-state area and along the way I got to meet and hang out with (and sing with too) people like Don McLean, Tom Paxton and John Denver (who was still John Deutchendorf back then). I had a seriously folkie childhood.
Pete is an amazing man who has dedicated his life - at great personal sacrifice - to the causes of world peace and the environment. If anyone deserves a Nobel Peace Prize, this man does.
This Sunday there will be a giant concert with an ever-expanding guest list all to raise money for the Clearwater and to honor Pete.
He only agreed to this concert if it was used as a benefit. He doesn't like people to fuss over him.
David and I will be there on Sunday, cheering and screaming and clapping with everything we've got. I am so glad that we are going and I plan to savor every moment.
