My first best friend was Gracie Bell in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn.  We wore long white nightgowns and ate bunches of green grapes on the roof of our brownstone while we watched the fireworks at Coney Island every Friday and Saturday night.  Where she is now, I have no idea.  We lost touch when I moved to Long Island when I was 8 and never heard from her again.

I had 2 best friends in Levittown.  The first was Peter.  We bonded in second grade in Mrs. Cotton's class and stayed best friends all the way through high school.  He graduated in January of our senior year and went right off to college.  Before he left, he made me a mix tape with a lot of our favorite songs and with him acting as the DJ.  At the end of the tape, he got serious and told me how much I meant to him and how he would never forget me or our friendship.  Then he played "You've Got a Friend" - the James Taylor version.  Where is he now?  Somewhere in Colorado, on his second marriage.  I haven't heard from him in a long time and I still miss him.

My other best friend was Brenda.  We became close in junior high school.  She taught me about makeup, tweezing one's eyebrows, how to giggle about boys and how to be a best friend.  I set her up with Neil, the man she would marry and have 2 children with.  She died of breast cancer before she had a chance to reach 40.  I still find myself reaching for the phone to call her sometimes.

You rarely get lucky enough to have such a great friend in your life.  I've had 2.

I've watched several films over and over again, definitely more than 10 times each:

The Wizard of Oz
It's a Wonderful Life
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
A League of Their Own
Love Actually
Waitress
Good Night and Good Luck
Totoro
The Last Unicorn
Help
A Hard Day's Night
Blazing Saddles
The Producers
Young Frankenstein
The Blues Brothers

Probably more that I'm not thinking of at the moment.  And no, I can't see myself getting tired of any of them.

Yes.  For anyone who has read what I've written about my brother it will come as no surprise to learn that I cut him completely out of my life.  Despite being born to the same parents, we have never cared about each other and there is no familial love between us at all.  I have always believed that family is comprised of the people you choose.

Sad to say, but I do not have good associations with St. Patrick's Day.  While I love the color green and I do love Irish culture and would dearly love to visit the Emerald Isle, here in the NYC metropolitan area, March 17th has come to mean commuting with huge hordes of drunken idiots who start drinking early and keep going all day.  I have been thrown up on, slept on and other unpleasant events on this day.  My office is also too close to Parade Central, being 2 blocks away from 5th Avenue and right next to Grand Central Station.  Last year it was pretty awful, so this year I decided to work from home today.

Good decision.

[Error: unknown template qotd]I miss "Gilmore Girls" terribly.  I loved that show passionately - Sarah and I watched it every week.  We have the DVDs and love them, but I MISS not knowing what all my friends from Star's Hollow are doing these days.  Sigh.  Rory was in the press corps with the Obama campaign - how did it go?  Did Logan ever come to his senses and realize that dumping her because she didn't want to get married RIGHT NOW was the dumbest thing he ever did?  Did Lorelei and Luke have a baby?  Sigh... I miss them.

I also miss Carnivale - very weird show but my kind of weird.
